After a mammoth series of different modes of transport (bus, train, overnight ferry, another 2 trains), we arrived in Athens. Yet another country with a different character set to our own, making life challenging once again! Anyway we had been told by several people to spend as little time in Athens as possible, so we bought a ferry ticket to Santorini, and had about 6 hours to kill. Checked out the Acropolis (large hill) with the Parthenon (big column building in restoration) on top and a bunch of other old stuff around it - Temple of Dionysus, big amphitheatre, etc. Brooksy had about 15 minutes sleep last night so was walking around like a zombie with his eyes closed most of the time.

One thing that was immediately apparent about Greece is how old everything looks and feels. The rocky mountains all look like they have been like that for millenia and all the ruins are significantly older than the Roman ones.

We had our first greek 'gyros' (souvlaki meat in pita bread with salad and chips) here, and it was delicious. No doubt we'll be having heaps more of them.

So didn't really see that much of Athens, just the area around the Acropolis, before heading off on yet another overnight ferry to the island of Santorini.
