Arrived in Madrid not really knowing what to expect. Itīs a city, like Canberra, which was made the capital simply because itīs right in the middle of the country, and not due to any historical significance. So thereīs not really much famous "touristy" stuff to do, except for some famous art galleries like the Prado. But having got our tripīs worth in the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Cam and I skipped Madridīs art galleries and concentrated on seeing and doing random stuff and enjoying the company of random hostel people over large beers.
Random stuff included visiting the first (and one of the only) statues of Satan in the world (the statueīs actually called the fallen angel) at a big parque known for itīs prostitution called the Retiro. We saw a great flamenco-jazz group at a nearby hostelīs bar which was fantastic - four piece band with vocals, bass, keyboard and a strange cube-shaped drum called a Cajón.
Large beers. Well, here they serve beers in 1 litre plastic cups. It looks about the size of a pint, maybe a tad bigger. But itīs true, 1 litre, so itīs like drinking the most part of a jug back home. I reckon theyīre onto something here.
