Palenque was a solid day full of action. Went and saw probably the most beautiful setting for some brilliant Mayan ruins - the last ruins we´ll see in latin america. The setting is basically incredibly lush green jungle, with the sounds of nearby howler monkeys clearly audible from most places around the ruins and small creeks and waterfalls around the place. There were plenty of well-restored grandiose structures with great vistas from the tops of Mayan pyramid-topped temples. It would have looked spectacular in the Mayan times, with the buildings painted in bright red, yellow and blue.
Next stop was Misol-Ha, a nice tall waterfall in similar jungle, which was a set for the Predator movie! Great hot day for a swim in the pool at the base of the falls.
And finally we visited Agua Azul, a great series of cascades of rocky waterfalls with deceptively strong currents. Swam and chilled around there, then headed back into town where I enjoyed yet another new mexican culinary delight - mole poblano with chicken, a nice spicy chocolatey sauce thingo. Hit the sack in a small hotel with the catchphrase "economics rooms".
