Right. After getting off the plane from Cuba in Cancun, we decided that hanging out with 2 million spring breakers was not our idea of fun and jumped straight on a bus south to a much smaller town called Playa del Carmen. However, the main street is pretty much thoroughly American. Everything in English, tons of american accents, expensive prices, cheezy "mexican" bands following people around, multiple McDonalds, Burger King, Subways, etc.etc.
Met up with a Danish guy I met in Mexico City, Kim, and his mate Mads. Hung out at the beach for some more Caribbean sunbaking and swimming, but then it started hailing. Not something I associate with the Caribbean. The next day we went snorkelling with some fish with what looked like blue "racing stripes". Wicked.
In Playa I ate some great local food - a soup with limes, chicken, rice and a bunch of other stuff, cooked cactus leaves, enchiladas, and the hottest chillies in the world (habaneros) - which werenīt actually that bad, the heat just lasted a bloody long time on tongue, lips and back of throat. Iīm loving the chilli sauce on everything here, itīs awesome. Also sampled the odd beer and tequila. In fact we went to this place where you pour your own beers, there are taps on every big table, and you pay for the amount you pour. Smoked the first of our newly purchased Cuban cigars with our Danish mates whilst pouring beers there. Good times.
So basically Playa was a bit of a chill-out time - beach, beer, and crazy but delicious local food.
