Over the past 2 days I've been with a friend of mine, Max Barros, and his family. I brought Max a large Vegemite Jar, he was thrilled - they are probably the only people in Chile who like the stuff (having lived in Australia for 12-odd years in the 80s and 90s).
Today I went to the Santiago city centre and walked around. It's some public holiday for the Virgin Mary or something like that today. I went to a hill really close to the CBD, Cerro San Cristóbal, which has a big Virgin Mary sculpture at the top, kinda like the one in Rio de Janeiro. There were tons of people there because of the public holiday. Fantastic views of the city, and it was a great day too. See photo.
Also went to Plaza de Armas (main plaza of all cities with spanish heritage), and another city garden-hill-type thing called Cerro Santa Lucía
I thought that the Yarra river could never be matched, but I think Santiago's river, the Mapocho, comes very close. See photo.
There is election 'propaganda' (posters and signs with politicians faces & messages, etc.) EVERYWHERE - national elections for president and senators is on Sunday. See photo.

Election Propaganda
. Santiago is actually much prettier than I had expected, it's improved from what I remember. People keep telling me that it's dangerous but i think a lot of Chileans are totally paranoid... I know that I stick out like an eskimo on Bondi Beach, because of my height and blonde hair, but haven't had any problems so far (touch wood).I thought that the Yarra river could never be matched, but I think Santiago's river, the Mapocho, comes very close. Keep up the posting Tomas, reading it is the next step up from google-earth in cyber-earth-trotting adventures :)
What about some night life photos. How's the music scene and youth there?
Hands up in Melbourne (and Tokyo) who miss Tom \õ/
