Everything was set, as I looked around the renovated court. Campers eager to take the basketballs out of the bag and start learning. The eyes of each camper gazing at the coaches awaiting directions. The sun was as hot as ever beaming down making the day even more beautiful. I took a deep breathe and tried to find something else to do before we could start. I was nervous, excited and happy all mixed together in a pot. The whistle blew and the campers all ran to the center of the court. It was under way, we split the campers by age & talent into (5) stations and began teaching, learning and mentoring on the game of basketball.

The campers picked up the drills very quickly and seemed very attentive. "Thank you" and "Yes" were some of the most common remarks made to the coaches and myself throughout the day. I truly felt "it" today that what I will be doing for the next 10 months will be physically and mentally challenging but the rewarding feeling of altering the life of a youth will be the driving force behind my work over these next 10 months. Day 1 is in the books and it was as memorable as an honorary first pitch.
