When I wasn't out trying to come to terms with the walls, I spent an inordinate amount of time watching the weaver bird in the photos put the finishing touches on one of his nests. He had chosen a fairly low-hanging branch that extended over my little patch of patio, and spent several days drawing attention to it in between adding whatever it was he was adding. He was loud, and very pleased with himself.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a period of truly enforced idleness, and it’s the first time in maybe ever that I haven’t had books around during that time. I really miss having books around. Even in the relative spare living of my year and a half in the Balkans I always had some books. It’s easier to carry a few if it’s all land travel. Coming to Africa meant leaving all of them behind, and, while I could read everything online, who wants to spend every hour of every day staring at a computer screen?

So, I sat and watched the weaver bird, and took a lot of idle photos that didn’t turn out. These are the best of the lot, and you can see they aren’t great. I’m hoping it’s because of the idle way I was taking them, and not that the camera is showing its age…

Eventually, the banking thing did get sorted out, and my last few days in Jo’burg were spent racing around paying all the outstanding bills, finally getting some of the things I needed. No descriptions or photos of filling prescriptions, or getting fillings, sorry.

A female weaver bird came along, didn’t like what she saw, and tore the bottom out of the nest. Here’s hoping his next nest pleases a female better.
