My arrival into Thailand was the complete opposite to my arrival in Delhi. I think I threw myself in at the deep end by starting my trip in India. I get the impression that travelling in Thailand is going to be far easier. Bangkok airport is huge, clean, organized and getting money and finding a bus into the city was insanely easy. A huge contrast to Delhi's tiny, dirty, confusing airport, where everyone was generally unfriendly and getting money was a mission and the bus...oh my god that bus was awful...old, rusty and so battered I didn't think it would actually move. So my first impressions of Thailand are cleanliness. The roads are free from cows, rabid dogs, monkeys and the drivers aren't as crazy as in India...well at least they drive on the same side of the road! I was so happy to find somewhere to stay with clean toilets that flush and a hot water shower that isn't just a bucket and jug. On top of that my room is clean and the bed has a mattress rather than a few hard blankets. I feel like I'm living in luxury. It's amazing what 6 weeks in India does to you...really makes you appreciate the little things.
Around Khao San Road is the backpacker area of Bangkok. It's absolutely heaving with travellers and feels a bit like living in a fair. It's fun for a while and it's good for cheap shopping, but I did get a bit sick of it after 4 nights. It wasn't the easiest place to meet people, although you would think it should be because of the number of backpackers. But I found that most people were travelling in groups and it was harder to get chatting to people. I did meet a group of British girls and some Norwegian girls who helped me escape from an old man who decided to sit at my table and attempt to chat me up all evening. This happened several times, I wish they would realize that a girl alone is not an open invitation to come and try out their cheesy chat up lines. Although it did provide some amusement for everyone sitting around me, especially when the police had to escort one man away from me.
The only tourist sight I saw in Bangkok was the Grand Palace, because the shopping was so great that I spent most of my time doing that. I wandered the streets getting myself lost around Si Lom, Central Chitlom, Pratunam Market and Siam Square. Lots of good shops, but this was on the day that I got scammed so I wasn't really in the mood for shopping (see next entry to see how naive I can be!). Chatuchak market is open every weekend and you can buy practically anything there. It's so huge that you get lost in the maze of stalls. I was there all day and I'm sure I didn't see half of it. I loved it and couldn't stop myself from buying far too many clothes. I think I spent my weeks budget in a few hours, even though everything was so cheap. I had to force myself to leave, but I will be coming back.
