Sibiu is the most charming town in Romania which we have seen and looks little like the rest of the towns we've seen in Romania (though Brasov has some of the same elements). The city was founded in the 13th century by German settlers and the place still feels like a German oasis in the middle of Transylvania, especially since its downtwon was massively restored in 2006, when the town was the European Capital of culture. We were taken aback by its medieval charm and apparent lack of tourists. We now have an idea of what the backpackers in the early 1990s must have felt when arriving in Prague: a beautiful medieval town with lots of charming little spots but updated for the 21st century and with lots of fun activities to do. We would recommend anyone to come and visit it before it too gets spoiled by mass tourism (we are of course aware of the irony that our recommendation may be a small part of that very process of the town being invaded by tourists...)
