Before venturing in the crazy international waters of the Amsterdam's canals, we are taking a detour through the much more quiet and friendly reaches of northern Holland (the province of Groningen to be more precise), where we are staying with some of Virginia's relatives. They have been exceedingly kind to us, feeding us so much good food that we sometimes need to take a nap just to return to more eating! Oh well, we guess it's good preparation for the leaner times ahead.

The countryside around here feels like a giant garden. Everything is so neat and proper and even the frequent animals (cows, sheep and horses) seem very civilized! We have marvelled at the Dutch engineering (we actually got some tips on polder formation that could come in handy with the gloabl warming ahead!) and seen a series of dykes close to the North Sea. Incidentally right at the northernmost point of our journey, while preparing to dip our hands in the sea, Virginia took a stumble on the algae dotting the shore The quintessential Dutch windmill

. The message is clear: we shall go no further north! That didn't stop us however from enjoying the delights of the north, such as raw herring (check out the picture).

For the people back home, this is the section with actual names. Tanta Nelly and Wim have been our gracious hosts, and we want to thank them very much, but we also got an excellent tour of the city of Groningen from Teun and his fiancee Michelle. Hopefully when we get back to Canada, they could pay us a visit and we could return the courtesy.

All in all, we are having a great time and we look forward to our continuing adventures.
