We had missed the festival by only a weekend, but the trouble seemed to be hanging around. Stories of muggings by machete and girls screaming back into the hostel after having their bags ripped from their shoulders filled our welcome into the beach side town with caution. San Juan del Sur, previously known for fishing, was quickly becoming known for it's world class surfing spots turning the town into a hive of toned and tanned activity.

With a long board clutched under our arms and a local instructor by our sides it was here we decided we would make our first ever attempts at riding some waves. Solomon was a natural managing to stand on his second breaker. The wind and current however, proved to be far to strong for my soft frame and after an hour of water bashing and gaining a terrible board rash down my front, I had had enough. For now I will leave the fighting of the waves to the little baby turtles we were lucky enough to witness being released into the ocean, all 89 of them! Adorable!

Note: Parasites plus rum on a party boat bouncing along in the ocean, before a long walk back to the hostel equals no bladder control and peeing ones pants on the side of the road.
