Where I stayed
From the narrow pedestrian stripes to the narrow river of Canyon del Sumidero, the colourful buildings were replaced for a day by towering walls of vertical rock. With parts of the wall reaching as high as 1000 meters and the surrounds being populated with many monkeys, birds and crocodiles the cruise down the 13km stretch of river to the dam felt pretty spectacular! The beautiful boat ride was followed up by a hot bus ride which came to an abrupt halt. Our vehicle had over headed and we were left wandering a small local fair in a neighbouring, not so spectacular, village.
Side note: Michelada, a popular Spanish drink made with a mix of beer, lime juice, sauces, spices all topped with a chilli salted rim. We managed to accidentally discovered this foul tasting concoction twice in the space of 10 minutes, both drinks were thrown away in disgust. We learned our Spanish was worse then we thought and it was the first time I had ever seen Simon spit out alcohol?!
