the whole city is still blown to bits though. every building more than about 2 storeys high has shell marks all over the top, and when you walk down the main street along the river, the whole wall is just pock-marked with bullet holes at about head height all the way along, from sniper fire. in the pavements they have left alot of the shell marks and filled them with red cement as a memorial to the people killed. and you cant go walking in the hills around the city because they are still full of landmines
but the people are completely amazing - they are so pleased to have people coming to the city that they go completely out of their way to help you. when i arrived, the guy in the information booth at the bus station took me to the right bus to get into town and told the bus driver where i was going. the bus driver then asked a woman who was getting off at the same stop as me to take me to the street i needed to get to, and so she took me there and wouldnt go until she was sure i knew where i was going and had somewhere to stay. theyre wonderful.
i went on a tour out to the tunnel that provided to city with supplies during the seige, which was amazing. the man who took the tour lived in sarajevo and survived the seige, and used to go through the tunnel himself as a child, so he had amazing stories to tell.
there is also the sarajevo film festival on at the moment, which is brilliant. so i have been going to see films everyday - amazing documenteries mostly, and i went to see the nick cave film "the propostion" last night which was absoutley amazing and horrible.
and to cap it all off, the whole city is filled with these really friendly kittens! i dont know why they are so friendly, but if you sit down in a park or anywhere really, a kitten will come up to you and try to sit on your lap, or rub against your legs. theyre so adorable, you forget that they are covered in fleas, ticks and rabies! there is one living outside the house where i am staying, he comes around every morning for a feed, and then tries to sneak into the house and hide under the beds. they are so cute! so im in heaven, because i have surrogate pets now :)
but i am leaving tomorrow to go to mostar, in the south of the country, and then to dubrovnik in croatia.
