Amazing Bilbudalur, Amazing week, Amazing Jon !!!
As said Kike(Spain), one of the other long term volunteer : "I could need 30 lifes in
Spain for one life in Iceland". It is a good summary of the last week.
The last week in Reykjavik was pretty chilly, not too many lectures, few excursions... One crazy day to set up the summer time plan... Pffffffffffff hard job... 20 workcamps through Iceland and 12 persons to affect on them... But we did it pretty well !
1st workcamp : Bildudalur in the Western Fjords
The road to get there was just amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing... 6 hours driving through unsealed tracks surrounded by mountains, volcanoes, snow, lakes, waterfalls, fjords and sea... I do not have the words to express how I felt.
Once we arrived, Jon (the host of the project) welcomed us and showed us our 3*** accommodation. Brand new apartments with "luxury" showers, kitchen, living room with view on the fjords and the sea... Volunteering : a style of life :)
We had a small introduction of what we will have to do : work on the construction of "Monster Museum" ?! sounds like great fun, help archeologues on an excavation site. They found graves with bones, swords, boats, houses... Excellent !!!
During our free time we just have to go on the other side of the backyard where the mountains take place... 6/700 meters high ! A perfect playground for kids like us. From the top the scenery is just breathless, fjords, colors are... amazing (even for a color blind ;) and the atmosphere is so mystic... Stories of the Icelandic Sagas took place centuries ago in the area, when Viking used to kill their own neighbours after different kind of conflicts
Mister Jon, our host is the best host that we could expect. He has his hands in every pies ! In the same day he is fisherman, tourist guide, business man, real estate dealer, boat maintener, exhibition manager and he still finds time to entertain us and give us activities like fishing, rowboat, boat trip in through the fjords and hiking. Thanks to him !
In a few word this week was made of :
4*4 trips, digging holes, picking rocks, building waterfall, climbing, hiking, sailing, enjoying, playing soccer, driving forklift (ahahah), rubbish dumping a whole factory, cooking, rowing boat... An amazing life, I recommand for all of you the volunteering life ;) Such a sweet life sharing a lot, receiving a lot and just enjoying what nature gives to us.
