A full day at the magnificent Chatsworth House – ancestral home of the Dukes of Devonshire – despite owning Hardwick Hall (see 2 days ago, which was a great intro to todays visit) and a previous mansion on the same estate, within a 100 or so years, the Duchy was so wealthy that they needed something much, much larger, fancier and awe-inspiring to live in.... We meet up with friends Bob & Pauline when we arrive and spend a great day wandering around the vast and overwhelming State apartments, then after lunch a portion of the even vaster grounds and gardens (the practical kitchen and picking garden for the estate is bigger than most small lifestyle blocks in NZ!) – although the heat is too exhausting to go too far..... Bob and Pauline come back to our cottage for dinner and stay the night – another great get together!
