Well, we've homesteaded! We've been in GTC for 10 days and counting. Not that we're complaining. What started out as high winds - 15-20 kts turned into a massive rain storm - same stuff Central Florida is getting. This week the winds have been up in the high 20's with gusts in the mid-30's with pounding rain. Each night we think, tomorrow we'll be able to move on, and then we look at the weather predictions and it just keeps on coming!
What we've consistently heard from fellow cruisers and islanders - from Exumas up to the Abacos - this has been the coldest and windiest winter/spring in recent history. It just has not stopped. For us, the entire month of April was 15 kts and higher and since we've gotten into the Abacos, with the exception of the first 5 days or so, it's been 15-30 kts. However the only rain we've had to contend with has been in the last few days. I've enjoyed it because it has been so cool, but we certainly have not done much swimming thus far.
We finally got our AC to work - the pump had lost its prime. The last time we ran it was when Dave was installing the new macerator in Nassau and only then for an afternoon. When Dave pulled the filter - it was completely clogged with mud and grass! Once we got it cleaned out - the pump had lost its prime but it was raining too hard to work it from the outside. We just kept closing the companionway flaps to various levels to let the air through but keep the rain out and occasionally trying the AC.
Finally yesterday the pump primed up and we had AC. It was nice to dry the boat out, however it has not been hot over here. Right now the companionway is open and we're just running fans (of course it's not raining at this particular moment!).
Leaks: We've got leaks in all kinds of places. With this kind of rain you really find them...or should I say experience them because I'm not sure you ever "find the leak" on a boat. We've targeted several areas to address when we get home.
Over the past couple of days I've read five books, watched Season One and Season Two of "Weeds" and the first half of season two of "Dexter" and a couple of movies. Dave has played at least 1,000 games of computer solitaire - his favorite pastime. We are perfecting the art of doing nothing.
We're getting quite proficient at finding all the weather sites and "Lady Hawk" who is in Green Turtle Marina (across the island) is emailing us their Chris Parker weather routing emails. They are heading up to New Brunswick, GA. Doesn't look promising due to high winds and squall activity everywhere. There is a small possibility of getting across Monday or Tuesday but winds are going to be high in this area for the next couple of days with moving squalls. We have to figure out how to stage ourselves out of here as it is still about 100 miles across the bank before we can begin to cross the Gulf Stream.
So, this may be our last input in the Bahamas Bound log until we reach stateside.
Life ...... is all about the weather!
