We got back to Christchurch and had a couple of days of work before New Year’s Eve came around. We both finished early and headed straight up to kaikoura where we met our friends at a campsite overlooking the sea. One of their friends has a static caravan there and we had use of that for the next few days, we had a cooker, wood burner and even a hot shower – this was my kind of camping. It was about 6 o clock by the time we got there and the boys headed straight off to collect some firewood while we stayed at the camp and set up the tents and got the dinner started.
We sat down at our table on the edge of the beach as the sun set and had an amazing BBQ and toasted to the end of an amazing year. The stars that night were incredible with no light pollution you could see millions, the milky way was even really clear as it made a divide in the night sky above us
arrived – the year we will be getting married!
The following day we were all nursing slightly sore heads and so went for a dip in the refreshingly cool sea to try and help us a little, we splashed around in the shallows for a while and dunked our heads (it’s not a classed as a swim if you don’t get your hair wet) before collapsing back at camp for the rest of the day. A family in the caravan next to us arrived in the afternoon and the guy managed to spear about 8 butterfish in the little bay in front of our camp so the boys quickly got into their wetsuits and went off to try for themselves, paddy actually managed to catch one which we were all very happy about and tai had a great time trying – at one point his spear gun wasn’t
properly loaded a big butterfish came swimming past and his only option was to try and jab it by hand, needless to say this method wasn’t that successful and all he managed to really do was nudge it in a different direction. Anyway we ate a lot of tasty butterfish and even tried paua for the first time a big mussel type fish whose home is a very pretty blue and purple shell. That evening
we sat around the fire listening to the waves crashing on the shore and chatting with our friends before finally retiring to bed.
Our last day in kaikoura started amazingly, we were sat by the caravan having some breakfast when we noticed some splashing out at sea – there was around 100 dolphins jumping and playing just out from the bay we were staying at
what and who he was before swimming away again. Around lunchtime we decided to head back to Christchurch, the start of 2014 has been amazing, we saw dolphins, swam with sea lions, ate freshly caught fish and drank champagne under a beautiful starry sky….lets hope it continues this way.
