We arrived at my uncles apartment in north Auckland around lunch time and after a quick catch up made our way over to the golf course to where Daniella (my cousin) was practising her golf. We had some lunch and headed off to the driving range where tai was taught by Benjamin (my 11 year old cousin) how to swing a golf club, tai was soon Benjamin's favourite person and proceeded to be for the rest of the holiday! The weather was noticeably hotter than in Christchurch and the following day we headed off to the beach where we played catch, Frisbee (until it got lost in the sea) and had various swimming competitions whose rules were always made up and were favourable towards Benjamin!
The 3rd day of our stay we headed out of the city a little to a place called spookers – an old mental asylum which is apparently haunted, we were guided around a very scary section by a guy dressed like something from a horror film and explained just how scary it is when the lights are switched off and night time rolls in, this was aimed at children under 16 years of age but there was definitely points where I screamed louder than anyone else – I’m just glad we weren’t doing the adult version! After making it out of the house in one piece we went into a 3D section of the house where all the paint on the walls stood out, there was strobe lighting and it was all very disorientating. The last part of the day was a maize maze – the maize stood so high and the paths were so narrow you didn’t even know if it was a dead end until you were right at the end. After an hour or so we made it out and again were thankfully that there was no chainsaw wielding hillbillies chasing us around the place – a common occurrence in the evenings apparently!
Our final day in Auckland we left early and headed into the city – it was strange to think we were here almost a year ago – so much has changed with our plans and we just can’t wait to see what the next year has in store. We hadn’t really had 2 minutes to ourselves since wed got engaged so we decided to splash out and have a nice lunch overlooking the marina, and so we chose a restaurant with the best looking terrace and sat for a few hours eating delicious food , drinking wine and soaking up the sun with some amazing views. Once we were done we decided to walk up to the sky tower and have a look – as soon as we got to beneath it we both just wanted to climb to the top, so we bought our tickets, boarded the lift and shot straight up to the 52nd floor, looking out of the glass and down to the ground we both felt our legs start to wobble, but the views were awesome. We decided we wanted to climb even higher and so up we went to the 60th floor, from up here it was not only our legs that were swaying but you could even feel the tower swaying in the wind! We sat and appreciated the views for a while and even saw someone do a bungee off the side, before we knew it it was time to head back to the car and make our way to airport for our flight – it had been a great few days in Auckland and a totally different experience to our first time there.
