The sun was shining and we decided that it was time to begin our summer camping adventures and what better way to kick start things than with a trip 2 hours north to Kaikoura for the Seafest – a food and wine festival held every year.

We set off early in convoy with me, mary and kaydi in one car and tai, pala, Annmarie and marty in another, we stopped to get some petrol and as the others were inside paying the car began to wobble and we realised it was another earthquake, it didn't amount to much though and we were soon on our way and a couple of hours later we arrived at our campsite in Kaikoura, we set up camp, put on our fancy dress – me and tai turned into quite confused pirates – me looking more like a gypsy and tai sporting a Mexican handlebar moustache.

We arrived at the festival around lunchtime and couldn’t believe it when we noticed most of the people were also in fancy dress- there were some very interesting costumes – Miley Cyrus being one of the best and a Japanese couple who were dressed as sushi!

There was a huge variety of amazing foods and lots of different beers, wines and ciders to try from all different breweries and wineries across the country, so we did the only thing we could – started at the first tent and made our way round to the last finishing in the music tent for the final few hours where we witnessed a very drunken hen party attempting stripteases on very drunk male bystanders!

Unfortunately the festival soon came to a close and me and girls dithered around the town talking to men dressed as women, a gingerbread man (his costume was just him – he was ginger – with a few loaves of bread tied around his neck), teaching yoga poses to drink induced poorly people and dancing around wearing a pig mask before tai finally found us wandering into a bar and told us we were heading back to the campsite to start our BBQ and campfire.

When we got back to the camp we headed the whole 5 meters onto the beach and began building our fire – 3 times – each time being told we had to move closer to the sea and further away from the dry bushland and people in their tents – made sense to our sober minds but not at the time. Anyway the boys did a great job and we soon had a roaring fire and seats set up where we chatted and drank the night away. The BBQ was forgotton about and instead in our slightly inebriated states we thought it was a good idea to just throw the food onto hot stones in the fire, melting our skin as we tried to get them out before they turned to ash in the flames what we were left with was some strange half blackened half cold burgers covered in sand and ash – at the time they were perfect.

It was a great night and a lovely night sleep as we listened to the waves crashing on the shore from our tents. The following morning we awoke to pure sunshine and bright blue skies and in typical camping fashion lazed around the camp laughing about the antics of the day before. Check out time was soon approaching and so we headed into town to fill our empty bellies with an overpriced seafest weekend special breakfast.

No trip to Kaikoura would be complete though with a little trip north to visit the cute seal pups that we saw last time play around in the waterfall – its coming into spring now here and there were not as many as last time but it was still just as awesome as before.

We sat on the beach watching the sea for a while hoping to spot a whale breaching and trying to decide what to do with the rest of our day – we hadn’t thrown all the food into the fire last night and so decided to head back towards Christchurch in search of a BBQ to cook up the rest – our search took us all the way to Annmarie and martys house (there are not as many free BBQ’s here as Oz) where we sat out for as long as we could trying our hardest to prolong a really awesome weekend
