After we left Tulum, we made our way South toward Belize. Stopped in a city called Chetumal right near the Mexico-Belize border. Its basically Mexico's version of Canberra. Whilst its not the capital, the place is full of government buildings, departments an so on... not a great deal to see there really.

Next day we jumped in a taxi in Chetumal and had the driver drop us off at the border, where we proceeded to literally walk across the border. We paid our "special fee" of 100 pesos (everything seems to be a special fee when they see backpackers or tourists coming along), crossed a bridge, and 200 meters later we were standing in Belize.

Until that point we didnt even realise that Belize was a Commonwealth country - where pretty much everyone was speaking English and the Queen's mug was on the currency! But as soon as we figured out English was the way to go... we thought "JESALENKO!! YOU LITTLE BEAUTY!"

Anyway, we flagged down a passing bus which took us the 15km further South to a town called Corozal - from which we had to jump on a ferry to the Ambergris Caye. Problem was, ferry didnt leave till 3pm and it was 10am when we rocked up. It was me, Tahls and Gemma (an America girl we met Tulum that tagged along). So we managed find one the ony pubs in town open at that time of the day (The Purple Toucan - we highly recommended if you're up this way), where we proceeded to down about 15 beers whilst playing darts and pool - waiting for 3pm to come along.

We took the 2 hour ferry ride to the Ambergris Caye (google it if you can - its awesome) to the town called San Pedro where we crashed for the night before taking another 30 minute ferry to Caye Caulker.

Caye Caulker is just awesome! A small island in the Carribean sea just off the Barrier Reef (ranked 2nd in the world...just after Qld's). The motto of the town is pretty simple - "Go Slow". The waters here are unbelievably blue, the reef is fantastic, its cheap and so laid back. When we weren't snorkelling or sitting by the water, we were perched up in our hammocks watching the world go by... slowly, very slowly!

On one of our snorkelling trips, we were taken to area of the reef which was inhabitted by literally thousand of stingrays. Being a reef, whilst we a good 20 minutes from the shore, the water was only shoulder deep. Anyway, we all jumped in, the guide threw out a few bait fish and before we knew it we were surrounded by literally hundreds of stingrays - all of them rubbing up against our bodies. All we could think of was Steve Irwin. Tahls was shitting herself. No wonder - the guide threw one of the bait fish at Tahlie whilst she was in the water, and immediately about 30 stingrays not only surrounded, but climbed all over her body... she screamed her head off... everyone else laughed including me... then, naturally I got in trouble for laughing too!

On Tahlies birthday we went to a bar where we met a few Aussies, Americans and Belizeans. As it turned out, that night was a trivia night - so it was Tahlies cup of tea. Before we knew it, we were all a bit drunk, wagered all our points on one question which we got wrong and ended up losing. Highlight of the night though was the whole pub (mostly made up of 2 to 3 toothed Belizeans) singing Happy Birthday to Tahls at the top of their lungs.

PS. Google the Blue Hole in Belize... awesome snorkelling and diving. Full of  sharks, stingrays, turtles... even a sperm whale.
