I have died and gone to Havaina... It is Havaiana heaven here, seriously. Today as we sat on the beach, the shoe shine man came around and offered to shine my shoes... my thongs!!! It was priceless. He had a small bottle of soapy water and a toothbrush. It amused us so much we paid him 10 Real, when the havainas only cost me 9 Real. hahaha see attached photo. He was a cool dude. (stace you would love it here- even the council workers wear them when they are working hahahah)

Well a lot has happened since our last entry. To begin with, we are in another country, Brazil to be exact. This is our last day, we are headed off to Argetina this evening and cannot wait for $5US Wagu steaks and red wine. Food here is better than it was in Chile, but that is not saying much. We both missed garlic so much yesterday, that last night we cooked pasta for dinner in the "kitchen" (I use the term loosely) at the hostel. It was such a debarcle at the supermarket that the lady behind the checkout called another guy over so she could share the laughter and increase our humilation... ah well, we ate in the end.

We have done a lot over the last week in Rio. The first full day we had we spent walking around Copacabana and Ipanema, both of which are gorgeous beaches. People here spend their day in one of two ways. The morning consists of running along the beach in their bikinis and budgie smugglers, doing push ups and showing off their muscled bodies, and the second half consists of laying on the beach drinking in the sun & Skol, the local brew. It is a hard life in Rio. The two of us looked like "Gringos"on our first day on the sand because we were so white in comparison to the locals.

The second day we partook in a surfing lesson. After the roasting the sun gave me on the first day, I lathered on the sunscreen for the surfing lesson, everywhere except my legs! The backs of my calves were so burnt that it hurt to walk. John gave me no symapthy. We were both surprisingly better than we had expected we would be in the surf. John got up on his first try!! That, however was immediately followed by him falling off and getting dumped. I was so jealous. It took me at least an hour to get myself up. We both had a few good waves, but it is safe to say the pain we experienced in our arms the following day was more from paddling back out after the whitewash brought us to shore. haha

How could we be in Rio and not attend a futball match at Maracana stadium? We watched one of the local teams Fluminense play Sao Paulo. It was madness!! There were only 45,000 people at the game, but every single one of them was mad!! It was like being at Subi during the prelim final!!. There were flares and banners and streamers!! Among all this madness, in the middle of Rio de Janeiro, we found a man wearing a Collingwood jumper!! Of all the unholy things. We had to get a photo to show Mick that he is not alone. It was so funny

We happened to be in Rio during a 4 day long weekend which made for quite a bit of partying. It was no ordinary long weekend though, this long weekend also happened to fall on the same day as the Gay & Lesbian Pride Parade!! It was hillarious. There were thousands of people down at Copacabana dancing along with the floats. They do nothing in halves here...

We have also done the usual tourist activities like been to see the Christo Redeemer Statue, which is huge. You really have to see it to believe how big it is. It is on the biggest hill towering over Rio. The day we went it was like 32 degrees and there were thousands of people there. The view from the top over Rio is beautiful.
We also took a rid on a cable car to another hill called the sugar loaf.

Have been mingling with the other backpackers at the hostels and they have introduced us to the local cocktail, Caiprioskas. It consists of Cashasa, lime and sugar and heaps of ice. Very yummy!! Laura, you would love them.

It is a little sad for us both to be leaving Rio, beacuse it really is an awesome place. Definately on the list of places to come back to!!!

Hope all is well back in Oz. Both of our hearts were roken to hear about Ben Cousins being dropped from our beloved Eagles. No Judd, Cousins or Chick next year :(

Love to our families
