We left Addis later than planned as we first went to the internet cafe to update some blogs and then had to stop at the clinic for me (an insect/spider bite has gone out of control and I had to get antibiotics). On our way to Awassa we also stopped at a factory shop to buy fresh strawberry yoghurt – not something easily found in Ethiopia.
Because of the late start we were forced drive a stretch in the dark, something that we have tried to avoid at all cost in the past. People walk in the middle of the road. Animals try to run accross the road. And well, some motorists drive like maniacs
Glad to finally arrive at our camp site, we found out that they now charge 50 birr per person per night. Very expensive for camping in Ethiopia. We decided to rather look for a hotel and ended up paying 45 birr for everyone – camping in the parking lot (2 persons) and an en-suite room (3 persons).
We bought meat in Addis that had to be cooked, so we cooked dinner in the parking lot to the amusement of the curious bystanders. Luckily we are used to being stared at by now.
We planned to play a game of bridge after dinner, but everyone fell asleep before that could happen…
When you wake up under African skies your day is never like you plan it
During this writing frenzy Tanya and I went for some vegetable shopping and to find the place in town where they are showing the Man United vs. Liverpool match. Having my football radar on, I could hear the cheering from a distance away. We ran up some steps to the cinema complex where they showed the game live. 5 Birr later we sat with about 200 other Ethiopians inside a warm and moist cinema, cheering Man United to a great victory over Liverpool.
After the football and cafe we went back to the same hotel to sleep. We took two rooms this time. This was a mistake which grouped PB and me in the same bed. During the night I woke up with PB very close to me. Suddenly his arm came up to my head (two important notes: 1- PB was fast asleep, and 2- PB is dating Antoinette) and he starts stroking my hair. As his fingers passed through my hair I slapped his arm away from me and asked him what on earth he was doing. He woke up immediately, turned around giggling of shame and went back to sleep.
The rest of the night you could fit an elephant between us, in an already small bed.
