About 15 km's west of Turpan is the ancient city of Jiaohe, meaning "River Junction" (because the ruins are located on an islet in a small river...the cliffs on either side made it easy to defend). This city was along the silk road and was the capital of an ancient kingdom there dating back to about 105 BC. The ruins are still standing as there is very little rain to erode the adobe bricks and plaster that most of the buildings were made from. The people who lived here were Buddhist and there is an ancient Buddhist stupa in the ruins which was pretty cool. The whole place reminds me of Tatooine, the planet where Luke Skywalker hails from in Star Wars. Very interesting place, crazy to think this city is over 2000 years old!

Wow, Trevor, what wonderful pictures! I had no idea this tiype of land existed in China. Those pictures from the dessert are amazing....... How did you like your camel ride? After riding one in Egypt, I decided that is one thing I would NEVER do again!!! What a rough SOB he was, and nasty too, kept wanting to turn his head around and bite me. (my camel only had one hump , so maybe that was the difference... haha). Anyhow, I am so glad that you are getting around to visit all these places.....keep it up. Love...Aunty Helen
