Well this was the highlight of the trip. Such a sharp contrast to the relaxed nature of the rest of the vacation, this was extremely difficult, but a lot of fun, and very rewarding. Mount Rinjani is an inactive volcano on Lombok Island in Indonesia.....it basically IS Lombok. It is the second tallest Volcano in Indonesia at 3726 meters, about the same height as Mount Robson here in Canada, or Mount Fuji in Japan. We went into this without having done alllll that much preparation. I had hiked a few mountains in China this year, and rode my bicycle a lot this year, so I felt like I was somewhat ready. I think Scott said he went to the gym and ran on the treadmill a couple weeks between couch potato sessions. It wasn't Mount Everest by any means, but it was a legitimatrly challenging climb. We made it, but it wasn't without pain! The trek program was a 3 day, 2 night trek where we started at the base of the Volcano on the eastern side, climbed to the crater rim on the first day which is at 2600 meters. We arrived at the crater rim at about 5 pm and took in the sunset, and had dinner before going to sleep. The trekking company provides hikers with porters to carry our tents and food (thank god). These guys were very impressive in that they all wore flip flops, and smoked cigarettes the entire time, and they glided up the slopes with ease while carrying all of that stuff. We were in charge of carrying only our clothing, toiletries, and water. The crater is about 5 km x 7 km across, and inside the crater is a lake....the lake is about 600 meters climb down from the rim. From the lake grows a newer, smaller volcano that is active, and last erupted last year. Stunningly beautiful place. The second day we woke up at about 2:30 am to hike the last 1100 meters to the summit in time for the sunrise. This was easily the most difficult portion of the climb. The last hour, and probably 600 or 700 meters was on a 45 degree talus slope...every step you would slide back down a little bit because of the loose rock. Pitch black other than our headlamps, and freezing cold. It was exhausting! From the summit (once the sun came up) you are rewarded with outstanding views of the crater, the whole of Lombok Island, and even Bali. Gorgeous. After the sunrise, we quickly hiked back down to the crater rim in search of warmth and had lunch. After a couple hours, we hiked down into the crater to swim in the lake and some natural hotsprings there. Then, hiked back up the 600 meters to the other side of the crater rim. It was at this point after all of the downhill walking that my knee stopped working. I was a little concerned that I would have great difficulties walking down the Volcano the next day. The next morning, I popped a couple tylenols and we gingerly walked down the Volcano. With the aid of a walking stick, and only bending one knee, I made it down, but it was fairly painful! We arrived back at the trek headquarters in Senaru and had a much deserved beer. A lot of fun, Here are the pictures.

Trevor those are fantastic pictures...... they make me feel like I am actually there. Don't think I would want to climb up to that volcano though~ maybe 20 years ago?? Iam glad that you and Scott are safely back in God's country, even if it is temporary. 20 years from now, you will look back and think that these were a couple of the best years of your life! I am sure glad that you have taken advantage of situation and really seen the coulntry..
Have a great time at home....... xxxxx
