Our nine hour journey began with a 5:30 am taxi, followed by a long bus and short unnecessary tuk-tuk ride to the border.  After Sylvia's spot-on preparations, we walked into the Kingdom of Cambodia without incident, a feat in itself when you consider the stories of travellers overpaying and getting misdirected by unsavoury characters (including corrupt border officials) in these parts. Having her cell phone with us has already come in handy several times.  We expected similar touts prompting us to buy anything and everything as we had experienced in Thailand but were happy to be left alone in the border town of Poipet.  Hopefully it's a sign of more peaceful and genuine interactions ahead.

From the border we took a short bus and a long, hot, sleepy taxi ride across the plains to Siem Reap, home base for visiting the temples of Angkor.  Abject poverty (half-collapsed open hut homes on stilts, people and animals wandering the marshy plains) with a few random signs of a smaller, more well-to-do class (mansions and country clubs) characterized the landscape en route to the city.

We made a five night reservation in advance for Mother Home Inn, a place recommended by our good friend Alan.  The reception that included a cold towel and welcome drink was a pleasant surprise for the price point of $29 per night; four-star service at two-star prices.  Jason immediately headed for the pool while Sylvia took advantage of the free high speed wi-fi.  Writing this poolside with a double Angkor beer in hand feels oh so good. Tonight we're off to explore the city.
