Our departure from this vast and beautiful country is so close we can almost feel it now, but still all we have booked are the four flights mentioned previously.  Does that make anyone else used to the routine comforts of home a little uneasy?  Honestly, I feel like we could easily spend a year conquering Canada... but not next year.  We have chosen our path based on many of the things we know and enjoy, inspiration from friends and other travellers known only by their willingness to share their experiences online, and by our mutual desire to be safe while slipping outside of our comfort zones from time to time.  What follows is a more detailed, yet still very tentative, itinerary with ten days to go...
We set off for the exotic west coast locale known as Vancouver to visit with Sylvia's family.  A week later the sky and water become one as we fly across the Pacific, landing in Bangkok, Thailand ready, but not really prepared, for the wall of heat that hits you hard in this asian metropolis.  From there we head south for a week or two in Phuket, Krabi, Ko Phi Phi and a smattering of other iconic islands; some with names on maps, some without.
February - March
A brief stop in the ultimate launchpad that is Bangkok shoots us east to Cambodia, home of one of the world's most famous and fabulous temples, Angkor Wat and one of the world's greatest tragedies of our time, the genocide carried out by the Khmer Rouge.  After a couple of weeks in Cambodia, we drift down the Mekong River into Vietnam.  We'll spend a month travelling up the coast from South to North, making a variety of stops along the way, including underground tunnels, sand dunes, beaches, tailor shops and overnight boat cruises.  Laid-back Laos will be next, followed by Northern Thailand... elephant trekking and cooking classes anyone?
A final brief stop in Bangkok and another long flight sets us down in New Zealand, one of the youngest and wildest places on Earth.  A month of mountains, glaciers, fiords and sites of many Lord of the Rings shoots will hopefully satisfy Sylvia's (and now our) dream to visit this land.
May - June
Australia awaits and we hope to see as much of it as we can, starting in Sydney, then on to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth (with the possibility of a rendezvous with friends in Bali, Indonesia, since we'll be 'in the area'), Darwin, Cairns, Alice Springs and back to Sydney.
Summer in Canada... can't miss it!  We'll be back home for a few weeks to visit friends and family, recharge our batteries and exchange some clothes and gear before heading south.
A few weeks in Peru lead off the second leg, including the famous Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu.
September - October
Chile, Argentina and a few footsteps on the Brazil side of Iguazu Falls are on the agenda.  We'll also make a quick stop in Toronto before heading out for the third leg.
October - December
From Toronto we fly east this time, to India, another big country with lots to see, smell, hear, taste and do.  The plan starts to get a little fuzzy right about now.  What we do know is that from India we fly high into Nepal.  This chapter ends with Himalayan trekking before heading home for the 2012 holiday season.
Stay tuned for our upcoming post: "What's in the pack?"
