Today I worked with Andrew and the fifth grade class. They are a lively group and I was quite happy to be working with a more competent fifth grade teacher than my last placement. The day started with book returns and writing work. I then introduced myself to the class and we began our day. The main focus of both fifth grade groups was Charlotte's Web. I read this book and watched the movie as a child, so I was quite familiar with it. To my surprise, Andrew asked me to read the first chapter to the kids! I was a bit nervous, but I think I did well with my reading. I then assisted the students with follow up work for the chapter, which included basic vocabulary words, antonyms/ synonyms, and a setting drawing. Upon completion, the students were asked to read the next chapter and then complete the next work pages. At the end of the day, those students who were finished with their homework were allowed to play games. I played Uno with a large group of boys in the class. It helped a lot that I shuffled and dealt for the duration of the game! The group was so silly and kept me laughing the entire time. I have found that to be a big difference between this school and the schools back home: laughter. The kids here are free and open and laugh often. Discipline and respect is expected, and the kids work well with that. They are allowed to be themselves and make mistakes.
After school, I headed back home for an early night. I was quite tired and wanted to get to bed early.
I wanted to post more pictures of the kids and the school, but for legal reasons, I cannot post them on the internet. Thus, no pictures today!
