Grindelwald day 6.

Today we woke to Mr. Oates hammering on the door at 8:40 yelling that we were supposed to be down to breakfast 10 minutes ago, instead of still napping in bed. We scrambled down to get our fill of foreign cereal and ovomaltine (effectively crunchy nutella) on toast and to hear the plan for the day.
By 10 we had started up the path that would lead us up 400m over 3km to a smashing view of the Untergrindelwald Gletscher (lower Grindelwald glacier). After a short lunch and geography lesson on glaciation from Mr. Oates we set back down the path towards the luge.
After about five runs each (with a fastest time of 54.5 seconds set by yours truly) we took the cable car back down into town and spent the rest of the day chilling at the hostel playing table tennis or shopping in town. It was pretty chilled.

Today was our last full day in Grindelwald. We made the decision to take the cable car to Pfinstegg where there is a summer luge track. However, before the luge, we walked the boys up to Baregg where there is a berghaus overlooking the Grindelwald glacier. The hike is quite a spectacular one as the track cuts across some very steep ground and at points hangs precariously above the gorge and river that drain the glacier. It is also a steep climb. The boys took it in their stride as they are seasoned Alpine walkers by now. the views to the glacier were very impressive. At the end we were able to discuss the problems of glacial melting due to the warming of the climate and how this created hazards downstream of the glacier due to the ponding of glacial meltwater. We were also able to eat Apfel Strudel and drink hot chocolate at the berghaus!
The return to and riding of the luge proved very popular despite it being run by a very grumpy and formidable Swill lady!
We are off to Zermatt tomorrow so will be having a traveling day. In all we have all been impressed with Grindelwald - the excellent public transport, the incredible scenery and the comfortable and well organized hostel have contributed to a great stay.

One again thank you for the update on the blog. We really appreciate it very much. The pictures are spectacular. We'll have to start saving up from now so that we could be there to experience it ourselves. We miss you all and eagerly await the next journal posting.
