After another long day of travel, this time by air, we had finally arrived in Chile. It was good to have flown this time but 3 transit stops in between did take it out of us. Two of those stops were in desert cities in the middle of nowhere and we were quite annoyed in having to get off the plane at the first transit stop to have our hand luggage re-scanned & our passports stamped. Then more annoyances arriving in Santiago. We had to collect our luggage and check in again for our connecting flight to Puerto Montt when the lady at La Paz airport had told us that our luggage would go straight to Puerto Montt for collection. Had we not wandered by accident to the luggage conveyor belt to see our luggage off-loaded in Santiago airport, we wouldn`t have known about having to collect our stuff and check in again!!

Despite all that, we did arrive in Puerto Montt safely with all our luggage. Although we had booked an accommodation last minute, the taxi driver (another by the name of Miguel) who took us into Puerto Montt city from the airport offered to show us other hostals that would be "better" according to his standards. We took him up on the offer since he seemed friendly & honest, plus Cat was a little smitten with him. Mind you, before getting off the taxi, she had already noticed that he had a ring on his finger - hmm..golly gosh she`s quick!

We did end up staying in one of Miguel`s recommended hostals, however, the granny-flat-like house was a little run down & unclean for our tastes so we decided to stay just the one night. Instead of finding another accommodation in Puerto Montt for the next day, we decided to take a local bus to Puerto Varas, 30 minutes from Puerto Montt.

We had realised that we had made a good decision when we arrived in Puerto Varas! The small port town was touristy but beautiful & very comfortable. If comparable, we`d say it was something like Port Stephens in Australia but a little nicer. We had booked ourselves into a hostal & were lucky to be given a flat-like room with a little kitchenette. Since Puerto Varas (and all parts of Chile for that matter) is expensive, we decided to make use of the kitchenette in our room to cook & save money. The only problem with cooking we found was that everything in the room from our beds to our clothes would smell of what we cooked! Yesterday it was omelet and pasta, tonight will be fried rice..haha

While staying here in Puerto Varas, we did take the opportunity to rest, visit the local casino & a go white-water rafting. The casino was only visited by Nita & I and we only played the pokies. Despite leaving with a AUS$5.00 loss we were amused by the "playboy" pokie machine, where we managed to see a lot of female nudity from winning the free spins.

The white-water rafting was heaps fun with lots of beautiful views of Mt Orsono and other surrounding mountains. We also jumped into the water rapids twice for a so-called swim. Unfortuately, due to the nature of the activity, I couldn`t bring my camera along to capture the moment. Our rafting crew were also quite fun & this time it was Mel who was smitten with one of the rafting guides *wink*.

A note on health: Nita`s recovered from her sickness although now a little skinnier than before from 2 days of not being able to eat. But it`ll be good for our swimsuit wearing days in Brazil! Mel`s come down with the cold & flu so the rest in Puerto Varas is doing her good. I`ve still got a little cough & continuing to try the different drugs (now cough syrup) available in our first aid kit. Cat was a little tired but continues to be the strongest & healthiest.
