loopy from the airplane coctails and dressed in light summer clothing ready to soak in any possible bit of sun rays.
We were greeted by a little beat up blue Renault ready to take us down the coast to my mom´s place in Marbella. Zooming down the autopista we saw one urbanicación after another as this place has been booming the past five years with new vacation homes for the rich and fameous.
I feel at home as we are climbing the long and windy road up toward Ronda, the radio is playing the latest Spanish hits. Finally at La Heredia, my little niece Filippa is opening up the door screaming “ dom är här nu!”. Lots of hugs and kisses as we haven’t seen each other for over six months, presents exchanged and stories told and of course, a fabulous dinner accompanied with sangria and lovely Rioja wine.
The following day was the last of the year that we celebrated by taking a hike in the mountains. All the rain from the previous week has resulted in lots of water in the rivers and a very lush landscape. Simply stunning, and the perfect place to reflect the past year.
We toasted in the New Near looking out over the ocean while Jan Malmsjö read “Ring klocka ring” (Costa del Sol is blessed with SVT World). The African coast visible in the distance and some fireworks fired from Gibraltar. The full moon shining it’s light over the coast. Yeah, this was a night to remember!
The following days we do a couple of more hikes adding up to a hefty 42 km (25 miles) in three days! The trails are steep and I must admit I’m feeling a bit out of shape as my step dad left me in the dust, guess living in So-Cal doesn’t do much for my cardio ha, ha! Not to mention my niece Filippa, who every time I get back home turns up some Spanish disco music on the loudest volume, grabbing my hand yelling “DISCO, auntie Mickis, DISCO!!!!” On shaky legs from our adventure in the mountains, we start to shake our booties. Tutu’s and boas are essential parts of this ritual as we move to the beat of ABBA and The Gipsy Kings (can you tell we share the same blood! ;)
Tomorrow we are heading toward Ronda, the oldest city in Spain, and Seville, where tapas and flamenco is on the agenda.
Wishing everyone a fantastic New Year filled with Peace, Love & Gratitude
