Our last trip to India was in Dec 2005-Jan 2006. It was a nice 3 week trip. Upon returning, one of my colleagues asked, "why didn't you just work a week or 2 in the company's local India office and extend your trip?" Hmm...

Fast forward to February 2008. I am invited to go to my company's Bangalore campus for a 4 day "Global Leader Program" management training course. The recently-constructed campus is nice. Brand spankin' new, 2 buildings are up, 2 more are under construction, and enough land to support a master plan of 12 buildings. Walking inside, it feels like my office in California. IP phones, connectivity to the internets, TelePresence...I get to thinking, is the world really flat? Can I do my job from anywhere?

I propose to my management to work the whole month of July 2008 from the Bangalore office. In lieu of a hotel, I will instead rent a service apartment at 1/3 the cost. And I will bring my family over on my nickel, since it is summer vacation after all - for them at least. And I'll help out with a few projects in-theatre while I'm here. On the family side, the goal is to spend time in-country, not as tourists, but as residents. Which means shopping at the local grocery store, running errands, sitting in long queues, etc. With my kids, my goals are to visit some cool places, practice some guitar/bass jamming (we brought a guitar and bass with us), hit some golf balls (we brought our sticks), and read some books.

The proposal is accepted. The stage is set.
