Recharged and ready to hit the road for the first time in 2010 we moved north from Boston to Portland, Maine. We checked into our quaint hotel, The Inn on St John’s, and made plans for our next couple of days around New England. We only had two real objectives, that was to see some small town America, and fill our bellies with delicious Maine lobster!
Portland is a small town, full of seafood restaurants, arts & crafts shops, the odd coffeehouse and a few boutique clothes shops. The main (pardon the pun) attraction in town is the Lobster, Maine’s finest! We took a locals tip and headed for J’s Oyster Bar, this is right down on the docks, perfectly placed for added freshness! Kristina ordered a plate of lobster & clams, whilst I had the haddock to keep the cost down, but we were going to share the spoils
It was hilarious watching Kristina do battle with this creature of the deep, armed with only a claw cracker and a tub of melted butter and her water dipping bowl! The clams tasted surprisingly meaty, a bit like pigs liver, and I actually liked them a lot. The lobster meat was good, but not as amazing as I thought lobster would taste. We had some trouble with the green slush in the lobster body cavity, or tamale to give its official title. Not sure what to do with it we washed it away, a smart move as we later learnt that this was the lobster’s digestive tract! Not as Kristina thought, which was that it could have been a herb sauce injected in by the chef to add flavour!
We hired a car to get out and about, taking day trips down the coast of Maine to the small resorts of York Beach & Orchard Beach followed by the hills & mountains of New Hampshire. As we were there when there was a 3 foot snow covering we were not surprised that all the resorts had closed for the season, but this was still the small town world we had wanted to see, and it was beautiful and quiet with nobody about.
Maybe we shall return sometime, maybe in spring to get the true feel of New England.
