I awoke at 4:45 AM to go on a boat tour of the various canals and mangroves that line Monterrico. I witnessed an amazing sunrise and saw various birds. The background was dotted with various volcanoes and in the morning light everything seemed so tranquil (except when the chain-smoker Danish felt is necessary to have her morning cigarette). The mangrove swamps were so quite and the birds made all of their various sounds. The canal and mangrove swamp was just starting to wake up.
The tour was in Spanish and trying to understand/ concentrate on Spanish at 5 in the morning was really tough. The mangrove swamp was formed as rivers draining from the highland find their paths blocked by the beaches. Thus, the water spills out into a swamp area until it finds the sea.
During the tour, I also got to see various local fishermen cast and clean their nets as they fished.
I took a little nap mid morning and then spent the rest of the day reading in a hammock and chatting it up with various people. I changed hotels to more of a backpackers place so that I could meet more people...bad mistake. I was paying only slightly more the night before for a really nice place. The backpackers place was loud and dirty. I had to keep telling myself, it is only for one more night...one more night.
