So it hasn't been all about grounding and fouling props. We've actually been having an amazing time and the beauty of this part of Illinois has far exceeded our expectations.

Our second night out we anchored on the river behind Sugar Island, about 3 miles south of the town of Morris. In the morning we zipped about in our dinghy and explored the area. We also went for a short run in the woods along a historic stagecoach road that parallels the old Illinois/Michigan canal.

The third through fifth night we anchored between Sheehan Island and Buffalo Rock State Park. It is gorgeous here, especially with all the fall colors! We spent one morning exploring Buffalo Rock with its vertical cliffs, two resident buffalo and effigy tumuli (giant mounds of spoil piles that were shaped by an artist to represent animal figures during mining restoration 20 years ago). Yesterday we zipped over to Starved Rock State Park and along the way marveled at all of the birds!!! Lots of great blue herons and flocks of white pelicans who, like us, are migrating south towards the Gulf of Mexico and beyond.
