Arrived at Lake Taupo and got picked up at the Bus station and taken to our hostel called rainbow lodge. It was a nice hostel with lots going on but we were put in an outhouse bit round the back and had to walk outside to get to the kitchen so we decided to check out other hostels in the area. We went to Lakeside lodge and they had a two bed apartment with Kitchen and mineral spa for only a litle bit more money so we arranged with the owner to pick us up the following day from rainbow lodge. Headed back via Pak and Save and made dinner in the comunial kitchen.
The following day we had to get up early for the move and were glad to get into our new lodgings and run a hot mineral spa bath! We then headed down to the town to go out on lake Taupo on a sailing boat called the Barbury, which used to be owned by Erol Flynn who won it in a card game, don't you Know. A great boat but not enough wind to sail her unfortunatly. We headed around the lake to see the famous Maouri carvings, along the way we fed biscuits to ducks as they flew along side the boat
We had to move for our last night at Lake Taupo because the apartment we were in was booked. We could have moved to a different one but decided as we were having to pack up our stuff we would go really up market to Beechwood lodge with its beautiful heated outdoor pool, which was just across the road from Lakeview. When we told the owner we had decided to move we felt a bit bad we were going across the road to one of his competetors so we said we were leaving on the bus. Our little white lie got rather complex when he started to insit on taking us down to the bus garage in his car. A difficult situation which ended in us leaving a little awkwardly cowering round the bushes and legging it across the road. Worth it though when we relaxed in the out door pool ( though Dave did make a comment that it was like swimming in a pond due to it being surrounded by rocks and plants).
Our last day at Lake Taupo after our illicit move was spent enjoying a trip down the river on the Rapids Jet which was pretty spectacular. It was very fast and it was amazingly monuverable. You nip in and out of rocks and so close to trees and the bank it certainly made you cling on to the warmed hand rails. Our driver kept doing 180's which were great but the best bit was the massive rapids it goes down were you quite literaly fly through the air then he turns round and goes back up them

01 The really fat cat at Lakeview.
. They actually took the food from your hand as they were in mid flight. We all thought the carvings were amazing but Dave was a little disapointed when Captain Dave our ships skipper explained that the carving were done about twenty years ago, he had thought they were ancient carvings done hundreds of years ago and was sure they were some kind of Lord of the rings style gateway that was just waiting for someone to find the secret key to opening it. After our beautiful boat trip we Went back to our appartment for another relaxing soak in the mineral spa, NICE!We had to move for our last night at Lake Taupo because the apartment we were in was booked. 02 Mount Doom from Lord of the rings!
. It was a really good laugh, quite exhilerating and we luckily stayed quite dry. We then went to see the Hukka Falls on the way back into town and had a lovely meal in a resturant which culminated in a food fight with our Brandy snap desert. Suzy started it by blowing cream out the end of her Brandy snap into Daves face, which obviously ment he had to retaliate. It all got abit messy. We went back for a relaxing spa in our whirlpool bath which turned into abit of a knightmare as it was so noisy we woke everyone up and then we noticed that something was wrong with the workings of it as it started spewing water up out of the drainage hole in the middle of the floor flooding the bathroom. So much for upmarket. Woke up quite early and Dave went in the pool for a swim even though it was pouring with rain. Then headed down to catch the Bus for our nine hour journey to Wellington.
