We stayed in the Kowloon area of HK spitting distance from the island. To be honest HK was a bit of a shock for us, we were ready for crazy antics, neon lights, Karoki etc what we weren't ready for was the hassle! No sooner had we got off the bus was I grabbed by the arm and the conversation went a bit like this.
HK 'you want room'
me 'no thanks, got one'
hk 'I have cheap room'
me 'no, got one'
hk 'come to my hotel, special price'
hk 'come on come on, you don't want to stay there'
me 'Pi*s off'
hk 'we go to my hotel now'
me 'If you don't F*%k off now........'
hk 'hotel just there'
A persistent little (choose words carefully kids might be reading) person. Now my reaction may have been a little bit more subdued if I had read the e-mail sent by the guest house we were to be staying in.
"Please do not show or give your booking information to any stranger, because our hostel is popular,
some people always stand in the street will pretend to be our staff and bring you to other place.
They will take money from you, before you find out that you have been cheated.
When you know the truth, they will not return you any money!
Do not trust any people on the street, they may be Mafia and make you trouble!"
Draw your own conclusions.
Once we hit the streets we had a great time, flashing lights, oversized electronic ads, weird shops etc it was great. HK had a real buzz about it and just wondering around taking it all in tiered us out.
The next day we went to the Victoria Peak, well worth a visit if only to go up on the tram. The angle of that thing is amazing, you have to go down facing backwards as you would fall out of your seat if the chairs faced the other way!
Dinner that night was pretty interesting, I thought i'd be safe by trying to order Prawn Toast and fried rice but there was a language barrier and I ended up with Prawn balls in a soup with some interesting veggies and the rice was no where in sight, however it seemed prudent not to complain as the table next too us were eating birds heads!
To finish the night off we did the most popular thing in HK, we shopped. Just got ot work out how to use this iPod now.
