NEW PEOPLE COMING IN FROM THE TRAVELPOD HOMEPAGE: Check out my profile for more of my particular brand of quirky travel nonsense in my other blogs, including the one that's still going...

Tuesday 3 November 2009, 4.31pm, on the train from Manchester to London

Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the internet... I’m blogging again.

So in keeping with my traditional kick off, I’m writing this from the train to London. I’ll only just manage it though, because Virgin, the cheeky devils, have put wifi on their trains (I believe I may have mentioned this on my return from Oz, but can’t be bothered checking just now) so I’ve been doodling about on Facebook, uploading pics from Jane’s 30th this weekend. Which was great crack, from what I recall (which isn’t a lot, really, but that’s shiraz for you). Thank you for having us, honey!

So. Off I go to Antarctica. It’s tres exciting, but right now I’m more concerned about the little things – my bag is heavy, my feet are hot, my flight is not for many hours and I have to pee. Still, I am once again being the world’s worst traveller and flying business class, so I get to explore another airport lounge, which is always fun. Although it’s just occurred to me I have brought nothing LIKE enough books to survive for a month. I hope this library they’ve got on the boat is a proper one, I may be holing up in there quite a bit. And I can pick something up at Smiths at the airport. Not that I really need to be carrying anything else – my backpack is a manageable weight, as is my little rucksack, but the two together are kind of torturous. Still, only have to lug it from Euston to Heathrow (oh good, changing at King’s Cross in rush hour).

Nobody on this train is doing any business. I just walked through a couple of carriages to get to a vacant loo and every person I passed who wasn’t just doing nothing was either reading the paper, playing with apps on their iPhones, or in the case of one man, updating his Twitter on his laptop. Actually, one bloke seemed to be making a PowerPoint presentation. I felt sad for him.

I really should be updating on something profound and interesting for the start of such an epic trip, but I’m just knackered, both from lack of sleep last night (was up late packing, because I am Susan, and there is no task too urgent that I can’t dissemble about it a little), and from contemplating that I haven’t even finished the first leg of my journey. After I get to Heathrow, I fly to São Paolo, then get a connecting flight there to Buenos Aires. Sadly I arrive after 11am, and I only have that one day in BA, so even though I’ll be knackered, I have to drag my tired hide out all day because I’m not wasting the opportunity.  If only I didn’t find Madonna so annoying, I’d know the songs from Evita a little better and would be able to sing the BA Big Apple song while I’m there. Of course, the Argentines would probably knock me unconscious.

Right, the train man is muttering something about going past Camden Locks, so I’d best pack up because we can’t be far from Euston now.  Catch you post-tube.

PS – points will be awarded for spotting the other musical film reference besides Evita in this post.

Well the Euston announcements do NOT include Camden Locks, because the train does not pass through them, so is it some mosher/EMO song about Camden Locks or something. Otherwise why have you put Sao Paulo when you are flying to Buenos Aires etc. Otherwise good luck, dear offspring.

Is this 'where's Wally' thing going to be a theme of this blog series? Any chance of non-profanity?

You're all a bunch of amateurs. Unconscious Argentinians? hello??

David, I didn't say the announcement involved Camden Locks, I said I heard the train man muttering something about them. He was stood a few seats down from me talking to his colleague on the phone. And I'm fairly certain I can tell the difference between a song and an announcement either way, and since when did they play music over the PA system on trains? Basically, stop trying to be cool by inventing a situation where you can insert the word emo. I connected in Sao Paulo, as you would know if you'd paid attention any of the thousand and one times I told you that. And no. No chance of non-profanity. Sorry.
