Monday 9 February 2009, 6.55pm, Virgin Upper Class Lounge
Okay, the Virgin Upper Class lounge might be the nicest room I've ever been in in my life, and I am not even exaggerating. If it wasn't a hopelessly gauche thing to do, I'd take some pics and upload them, it is a TREAT. Check-in and security was a total doddle, and I am now happily ensconced in the little office section, which features eight workstations with a computer and room for a laptop to be plugged in, plus free wifi, of course. The walls are lined with leather bound books and a man is speaking angrily into his mobile in rapid fire French opposite me. To my left I can see a huge cinema screen with Sky Sports (Ant would approve - not my bag, but I can see how for your average punter, ie. Businessmen, it's a good thing), surrounded by massive couch/armchair hybrids big enough to sleep on comfortably but small enough that one person can sprawl on them without feeling guilty about taking up too much space. There is every kind of conceivable seating arrangement here, including swingy glass bubble chairs. There is a hair salon/spa. There is a pool table. There is a fleet of waitstaff bringing everyone food and drink. There is a bar, which looks like it serves a rather nice mojito, judging from what I saw when I walked past. And I haven't even been upstairs yet. (Oh yeah - there's an upstairs.)
The lounge is so lovely, it even detracts from the sadness I experienced when Conchords inexplicably would not work on my laptop (I think it might be a copy-protection thing). So now I am listening to Amy Winehouse, punctuated with the odd interruption on the subject of departures, and smelling some delicious smelling food. I don't know what I am smelling, but it smells good, and I think I may have to adjourn to one of the seats with a menu on it soon to investigate further.
My flight is in a couple of hours, and apparently Virgin love their passengers far more than BA - rather than sitting glumly at the gate, the hour or so we will be in Hong Kong can be spent in the lounge there instead. I would be interested to compare it to the Cathay Pacific one, unless it's the same one (in which case I shall greet it like an old friend!), as the CP one was lush. Then it's onward to Sydney on a new plane, after going through security again (as the Virgin lady thought to warn me - strike two, BA) where I shall arrive in theory bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but more likely feeling frazzled and exhausted. Sleep will be my friend. Mmmm, sleep.
Okay, the smell is now too much to bear. I'm off.

Re: My Inspiration!!
Rhys - oh no you di'in't. You did not just say 'flaming galars'. What happens if I make an Australian friend and they read that? They're going to lynch me in your stead. You might as well warn me to beware of convicts and sheep-shaggers.

I am well wistful of friends, but far so more of foes. You can never find a good foe on holiday.

Bennison - Do it! Travelpod is the future. Though is it living in Spain as such if it's only a week? I'm pretty sure that's just called a holiday... ;)
