Jai was feeling thoroughly at home in our new house, entertaining and endearing himself to everyone. He revealed an inborn talent for the piano and got our hosts to play a drum accompaniment for him.
Over a fruit salad breakfast we talked to the other guests, an Italian of butch proportions and his South African red haired girlfriend, who proudly told us about her Irish descent.

Our intention in coming down south was to stay at the quiet Polhena beach not far from Matara, so off we went there by bus. From the main road we walked down a long track and met a retired English architect with whom we strolled along in conversation.
The hotels of Polhena were expensive so we ended up as guests in another private house. Again we had our own bathroom and beds with mosquito nets. We were again with a nice friendly family.

We visited the local beach, which we thought being shallow would be good for Jai, but once Andy had remarked that it was a coral sea that could cause painful cuts on the feet, Jai refused to go anywhere near the water. No amount of persuasion could change his mind, so Andy and I swam and splashed about in turn while Jai contented himself playing in the sand.
As the sun was setting we met a dark skinned Sri Lankan called Lulu, with his quiet fairer friend, Vimal. Lulu had not only been studying in Russia but had once worked as a washer upper in London. He expressed dissatisfaction towards the Sri Lankan government, which he said pursued a materialistic course while unemployment was yet rife.
Many locals were now arriving on the beach, observing us and making friends with Jai.

We ate our evening meal at the house, a nice curry with brown rice and followed by fruit salad.
