After stocking up on rice cakes we left Colombo by train to the seaside town of Matara which was at the end of the railway line.
It was late when we arrived and the guest houses we checked out were all full.
Some loitering locals professed to be friends to a family renting rooms and when they took us there it turned out that they were not friends really but touts after a 50 rupee pay off from the owners. It was a nice house opposite a Methodist church and the family members were pleasant and warm hearted.
We had a big bed with mosquito net in a large room with attached bathroom. This was our first mosquito net so far and was brilliant to sleep under. I could hear the mossies desperate to get in to suck our blood but unable to.
