On a Train

Flag of India  , Mahārāshtra,
Friday, March 15, 1985

On our first train a man showed us his rather dangerous looking Rajput sword. He said Americans were always keen to buy them.
On the second train we were lucky enough to find seats for the journey to Ahmedabad, but from there we encountered difficulties.
On the third train the carriage for unreserved travellers was packed out, and with no space we had to sneak into a reserved one, where we could at least find some floor space.
When the conductor came he ordered us to get off at the next station. We ignored him so he returned with some policemen. The conductor grabbed my bag and tried to throw it off the train, but I grabbed it back and we refused to move. The police didn’t seem to mind, so the conductor gave up on us, and we lay down on the dirty floor and went to sleep.
I awoke to hear one of the policemen trying to chat up Mala.
Seeing that I had stirred he began on me. He said stupid things like, ‘I love you’, and ‘You make promise’.
We told him we were celibate devotees of Krishna but still he persisted.
He left us alone for a while but then returned and said we had to come and sit with him. We preferred the dirty floor, even though a beetle had got up my jeans there and was biting me. I had to go to the bathroom, take off my jeans and remove the little brown beetle.
The policeman sent his friend to try and lure us to him and when we still refused he tried to chuck us off the train.
Again we refused to move and eventually we were left in peace.
