Flew to Mackay but had a mechanical fault (eek) and had to turn back and land at Brisbane.  Sprinted to check-in and managed to get a flight to Mackay same day (eeek) - a small plane!

Lamberts Beach, Mackay - lovely place.  Stayed in a nice hotel - not posh but really comfortable.  Went to Information centre - met a lady looking for accommodation who'se husband was diving near Hayman Island on Whitsundays - wearing a wetsuit but unfortunately got stung behind the ear by an irukanji jellyfish (very bad!).  He was airlifted to Hayman Island then Mackay hospital.  Put me off diving a bit so didn't swim in the sea!  Dave did go in the sea and lived to tell the tale!  I was not impressed and the sea was rough too.  Saw a really unusual tree with white flowers growing up the trunk (all you botanists out there - what was it?)

23/1/10 - 24/1/10

Eungella National Park - Drove out of Mackay about 1 hour inland to Finch Hatton Gorge.  Had homemade mango cheesecake at a really nice cafe in the forest (grow their own mangos).  Walked about 2km on a track through the rainforest to 'wheel of fire', a fabulous swimming hole with a cascading waterfall, surrounded by forest.  Not too cold either - for about 15 minutes we were on our own there - lovely.  Saw cookaburra's and black cockatoos and a beautiful butterfly - bright blue and black.  Walked to Arunue Falls, another swimming hole just as impressive but more people.  Drove to Broken River to spot platypus's but no luck.  Did see lots of turtles though!  On the way back to our cabin, we picked up a Canadian couple who were lost in the forest after walking.  Very sweaty and panicked - we took them to their car - our good deed for the day!

Next day - huge winds and very heavy rain.  We had booked to do a forest flying thing on a zip wire but conditions weren't good enough.  Never mind!  Drove to Airlie Beach - nice cabin - lots of rainbow lorokeets (parrots).  Went for a swim in the pool - very hot day and very humid.  Went to eat overlooking the sea as the weather was coming in - very black with bright blue sea - looked amazing.

Decided to do an introductory course on scuba diving.  It was really good.  The instructor was excellent and I was OK with the equipment and could dive down and scuba on the bottom which is amazing as I was not sure I would even like going under the water!  Dave was OK too, so a good day and worth doing!  Went home and decided to do the PADI Scuba course which is a 2-3 day course.  Today (26/1/10) - did first day of course - theory and tests followed by more skills in the water.  We'll see what tomorrow is like as Dave felt seasick after today (it was in the pool so ................).

Happy Austrailia Day !! Your adventure just seems to get better and better. Serious stuff learning to scuba dive but it will no doubt open up more new experiences before your return. Sorry but no ideas on the parasitic flower, thought at first you were hiding from Dave. Windows arrived today all look good, Quite heavy installing likely to be 2 man job.

hi Sue,
By now you will have completed your scuba diving course and got the t-shirt! you are brave! did Dave make it to the end after you said he was feeling sea-sick on day one? You will find it so cold when you get back here. I was out walking this morning and we had a short snow flurry. Apparently it's quite bad again in Scotland. Rog has gone to Tigers to do some of the gig. It's the 3rd where he's gone to play for a short while. He's getting a lot better but still no news of a date for his second op to reverse the procedure. I've booked a few days in Madrid with my friend Annie for just after Easter and am now worrying that the op will not allow me to go. We've also booked France for May (Rog and me )but that's a long way off yet.So glad you are continuing to have such a good time, love Deb xx
