Taos

Thursday morning, after checking out of the hotel, putzed around Taos a bit, then hit Orlando's for lunch again. From there, drove the 10-15 miles west to the Rio Grande Gorge bridge, which is the second highest suspension bridge in the US (check out the photos). Also, did a short hike along the nice West Rim Trail, before heading back through Taos and on toward Santa Fe where the plan was to find a nice campground in the Pecos Wilderness and then do a high alpine hike Friday morning. The gloomy skies gave way to a steady, cold rain before I reached Pecos, so I aborted that plan in favor of a cheap hotel south of the city...and just a few miles from Santa Fe Brewing, which I visited after checking into the hotel. Ended up staying till close (midnight, I think), after striking up good conversations with a College of Santa Fe student (originally from Massachusetts) and a couple native Americans attending the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. They told me about the Santa Fe Fiesta this weekend and the Burning of Zozobra, which kicked off the Fiesta tonight.
