Gutted about the camera but fortunately cousin Richy accidently downloaded all the photos onto his computer, so, we haven't lost them, also camera is insured, so don't feel so bad.
Picked up Pacific Highway 1 in San Francisco and drove past San Jose, Miramar (?Top Gun).
Drove the wrong way down a dual carriage way first thing in the morning with cars coming at me in the opposite direction, whoops, quick 3 point turn called for. Jane not impressed.
Anyway the coast road is beautiful, its a single lane road that hugs the coast and crosses lots of tall bridges.
A view of the Pacific Ocean crashing in on one side and forrested mountains on the other. Eventually we had to force ourselves not to stop at every 'vista point' as we only had one day to drive down to Santa Barbara.
Stopped for a hike through at the Julet Pfeiffer state Park. We walked through a grove of redwoods and I was relieved to see Jane snap away with the camera making up for her missing shots of Muir Woods. The trail rose along the side of a canyon to a waterfall before eventually climbing to give a view of the Pacific through the trees.
More stops along the way at a rocky beach and also to see Elephant seals. Unfortunately all the seals had finished mating and disappeared except for one male which was dead on the shore (too much nooky).
Last stop Hearst Castle. This was built by the guy that Citizen Kane was based on. We went to the museum there. Mr. Hearst was born into a wealthy family and had his fingers in a few pies, newspapers, film production and politics mainly. In his latter years he sunk a lot of his money and time into creating a mansion on the west coast which was truly decadent (and a bit tasteless).
