Arriving in civilized westernized New Zealand was a welcome relief from the 8 months of roughing it in South America, but even better we were about to meet a lot of friends from home. After a connecting flight through Auckland to Wellington we explored Wellington for a few hours and headed north for Hastings in Hawkes bay to meet up some friends from Galway days who were living in nearby Havelock North. We arrived in time for a big night out and forgetting about jetlag, met up with Shane, Micko, Roisin, Jen, Lisa, Caitriona, Caroline and Noelle all dressed as Lazy slob, Little old lady, Ladder, Lego, Ladybird, Lion, Little baby, and Little red riding hood for an L themed party. We went as the big Lebowski and a Llama which looked a lot like our own clothes. It was a great night spent catching up and exchanging travel tales.
We stayed in Shane and Mickos house for a day then set off on a road trip with them and Noelle in Starsky their camper van to explore the North island. We went to Taupo, Hamilton, Auckland airport to pick up Ann and Ronan, and the Coramandel peninsula. It was an action packed week involving crazy acrobatic climbing, hot springs, hot water beach, waterfall jumping, hamilton gardens, rounders, crochet, beard comparisons, fine dining and some partying.
We returned to Havelock North for some more partying but because we only had a short time for New Zealand we had to say goodbye to everyone after the weekend and head for the south island.
