It was a boring trek from El Tunco to Juayua, one that should only be taken once. Juayua is a small town on the Ruta del Flores famous for its weekend food festivals. We happened across an El Salvadorian/Australian guy named Steve painting the outside of a brand new hostel with an unpronouncable name. So we became guest one and two in the hostel we referred to as hostel Ha.
We walked to some mini waterfalls and swam around in the pools having a great time. Fortunately another group at the falls had splashed out on a guide and he convinced us to swim through the dark tunnels with strong currents that connected the pools - scary but brilliant.
Steve brought us to a local bar that has no closing time and here we decided to join him the next day on a return trip back to El Tunco for a much hyped reggae festival. The trip back was even worse than we remembered and by the time we arrived in El Tunco we had already regretted our decision. When we realised our tent was unusable and all the accomadation in the town was full we regretted our decision even more.
Full of despair we went boogie boarding for a while and fortunately met up with an Estonian couple from the Spanish school who offered us the spare bed in their room. We hung out on their balcony for a while before having a great night at the festival. All`s well that ends well.
We got back to Juayua in time for the food festival but went for cheap pizza instead of expensive rabbit and frog. The next day we walked four km uphill to a disappointing volcanic green lake. In the evening we hit the local bar again with a vengance this time which delayed our departure by another day. We were sorry to have to leave Juayua but we arranged to meet up with Steve in Melbourne.
