Flores is a picturesque island town mainly used as a base to go see the nearby Mayan ruins of Tikal, probably Guatemalas biggest tourist attraction. Our hostel had a great balcony with a spectacular view. We had a ridiculously early start in the morning to go see Tikal so we had an early night. Jimbob and Timbob, the Austrailian rum drinkers from Coban, were still with us. Tikal has plenty of cool temples and ruins and we spent a few hours wandering around climbing some, learning all about the history of Tikal and the Mayans and discussing whether or not the film Apocalypto was accurate.
When we got back to Flores we had time for some long distance swimming outside our hostel. This was followed by plenty of relaxation appreciating the sunset from our balcony, and an easy night in the pub eating and drinking. Unfortunately we parted company with the 2 aussies the next day and headed for Rio Dulce & Livingston near Guatemalas Carribbean coast.
