Seventy euros and forty dollars would have been enough in Colombian pesos to get us to San Augustin and then to our credit cards in Popayan comfortably, had we changed the currency in Bogota before we left. But we didn't, so we arrived in San Augustin on a bank holiday Monday unable to change the euros and getting a very bad exchange rate for our dollars. This meant that we wouldn't have had enough for a b*s to Popayan and food. Fortunately we met an American couple that we had met previously in Bogota as they rode their horses past our campsite. They gave us the b*s fare and fed us that evening (thank you Kip and Noelle).
While in San Augustin we still managed to see the main attraction which was a funerary site containing tombs and statues from pre Inca times. We were very drained from the overnight b*s journey from Bogota and very tired and hungry from all the walking so we didn't really appreciate the historical site. We camped in a horrible campsite with disgusting showers so we were in no rush to spend any more time there. The next day we were waiting several hours to get a six hour b*s to Popayan, so we were getting quite hungry once again. In hindsight, we should have either gone straight to Popayan first or had our cards sent to Bogota where we were very safe surrounded by fellow travellers and Hermann who all offered us money or help, but we'll know for the next time....
It was an interesting experience being so broke so far from home and having to rely on the generosity of strangers, but we're glad it's over.
