Amazing fact number one: despite my head being burried in the either the guidebook or the Latin American phrasebook or my stupid turista gaze, I have yet to step on any of the many piles of dogshit that populate the sidewalks here. Aaaah, the stray dogs of Valpo. During the day they lay around on the sidewalks looking more like they are dead than sleeping. At night they are like rats scavenging through the many garbage bags that are left on the streets. And the strays aren't the only ones shitting on the streets. And then late at night they get to barking. You can hear a loud chorus of barking from the other cerros.
More fast facts: It can get really freakin' windy here in the late afternoons.
I'm really tall and blonde. The siesta is alive and well--it´s sometimes hard to tell when places will be open or closed and often the actual hours have nothing in commo with the posted hours. I've been shortchanged more than a couple of times--I'm on to them now! You've gotta book your buses well in advance. I'm here an extra day because Monday's bus to Calama is completo--and there were only two seats left on Tuesday's! more on Viña and Valpo in next entry... More thumbnails ...
