Okay, so chichas definitely cause hangovers. Itīs la festiva de independencia and the chileans do it up. Dia de independencia es Sep 18th, Martes. They take three days off. Everything and I mean everything shuts down on the 18th. Only a very few tiendas (corner store) are open and the odd bar/resto.
Back to the hangover--itīs not Tuesday yet--Monday the 17th. Everyone starts trickling out of bed starting at around 9. Pato decides weīre going to have a bbq for lunch, c/w wine. We all know about chilean wine and call me crazy but I think itīs better here. And meat. Lots of meat, steak, pork, chorizo. They love their meat. Oh there was a bit of salad. Lunch was followed by a bit of a nap and then a stiff walk up the hill to see the famous Cerro San Cristabol (virgin Mary) statue c/w some great views and serious smog inhalation. Did I mention the smog? L.A. looks almost like a model city for clean air by comparison!
Believe it or not, back at the hostel more partying ensues. I am delighted to help the other guests by helping to eat up what remained of the various dinners they had prepared for themselves. Itīs now somewhere around 10 p.m. and there is not a single botelliria open--no cerveza! Maybe itīs a good idea to go to bed early, despite the party that continues beneath my room until somewhere around 4 a.m.
